Ages and Entitlements:
At 16, once you have recieved your provisional licence you may take the Compulsory Basic Training (widely known as the CBT). Once completed you may ride up to a 50cc Scooter or Motorcycle for 2 years with 'L' plates, but you may not carry passengers (pillions) or use the motorway.
At 17, again with a provisional licence, you may take the CBT on a 125cc Scooter or Motorcycle. Once completed you may ride up to a 125cc Scooter or Motorcycle for 2 years with 'L' plates and, as at 16, you may not carry pillions. However, after adequate on road tuition, and the completion of the Motorcycle Theory Test (Call 0300 200 1122), you may choose to take the practical tests (Modules 1&2) for your Full Licence on a 125cc Scooter or Motorcycle. Once passed you may ride any 'cc' (e.g. 250cc ~ 1200cc) motorcycle up to, or restricted to, 33bhp without 'L' plates. With a Full Licence you may carry a pillion and use motorways. After 2 years the restriction is lifted and you may ride any 'cc' motorcycle.
From the age of 21 you are able to go straight for the Full Licence. To do so you must first complete your CBT and the Motorcycle Theory Test. You may either carry out the tests on a 125cc machine and have the restriction lifted after 2 years as at 17, or take the tests on a motorcycle of at least 46.6bhp - usually a 600cc Motorcycle with no resrictions.
